Tomorrow night is movie night at 103 Spring

103 Screens The Triplets of Belleville Tuesday at 8:30pm

Tomorrow (Tuesday Sept 1st) the theatre on the green at 103 Spring St will screen The Triplets of Belleville at 8:30pm. When her grandson is kidnapped during the Tour de France, Madame Souza and her beloved pooch Bruno team up with the Belleville Sisters–an aged song-and-dance team from the days of Fred Astaire–to rescue him.  This film was nominated for two oscars and won a total of 18 awards when it was released in 2003.  Reportedly a very funny inventive movie with a fab sound track.  Sounds perfect to me for viewing from the beautiful lawn under the stars at 103 Spring, but in this venue any film would be fun.  If you have not already caught a film at downtown Charleston’s only outdoor movie theatre then you should definitely check this one out.  Even if you are not a fan of french movies, this is more than a theatre, it is an experience!  Bring a lawn chair or picnic blanket, last time I brought a bottle of red and some sushi.  $10 ticket $5 corking fee, beer and wine sold.  Contact Mike @ Eyelevelart.com for more details.

Charleston Sc has grown into an extremely popular destination in part because of a variety of fabulouse event venues.  A new venue in Elliotborough has opened it’s doors.  The space consists of a 2500 square foot warehouse at the front of the property and an equally large walled courtyard in the rear.  The interior boasts high ceilings and concrete floors that allow for all sorts of configurations. Bring in a car or build a stage!   Create rooms within the space for added drama with fabric walls or set up a petting zoo, the possibilities are nearly unlimited.  The large sliding doors in front allow easy access for setting up equipment and catering, vans can drive into the space for deliveries!  The intact original facade of 1870 Charleston single house has been incapsulated within this warehouse, it must be the most unique preserved interior backdrop in Charleston.  The wall adds the element of the antique and the theatrical to the modern urban space.   The garden is a sharp juxtaposition from the avante garde interior.  Multiple ponds create visual focal points to the large green lawn, blurring the lines between garden and art.  Lush bananas, bamboo, water hyacinth, tea olive and gardenia are just a few of the plantings in this hidden garden surrounded by 9 foot concrete walls.  103 Spring St is Elliotborough’s premier event venue with over 6000 square feet to party in downtown Charleston rain or shine, weddings, bat mitsvahs, birthday parties.  Valet parking or parking in a nearby lot is avaliable Book now for introductory rates contact Mike Elder at www.eyelevelart.com.

Last night’s movie was so much fun. Jessica and Chris met me on the lawn at about 8:15 with wine and sushi. A laid back crowd of around 25 movie enthusiasts enjoyed cool beverages and breezes and laughed heartily at the timeless antics of Chase and Aykroyd. Only about half the viewers had seen the film before. A good time was had by all.

Parking Please! I beg you, no more tickets!

August 10th, 2009 by Currie

Downtown Charleston Sc Parking Districts Map

Downtown Charleston Sc Parking Districts Map

Because parking is at such a premium aka. $$$ in downtown Charleston Sc, the city has separated parking enforcement from law enforcement.  That means we have an entire government entity whose job it is to put the screws to anyone with a car.  No bikes for these officers, oh no!  They drive around all day in comfy air conditioned Crown Victoria’s papering the city with $22.00 tickets (I once received five in one day).  The laws are very strict and the enforcement even more so.  Your best bet is to figure out the rules of parking early on before the tickets start stacking up on your windshield, because next is the boot, then towing and it goes downhill from there.  New residents and renters: your first priority, the minute you get your deed or lease, GO TO THE DMV.  parking is on the 2nd floor, take a number, (make sure you have $7.50, your license, your registration, your lease or landlord form, or deed with you.  If your  house is deeded to an LLC additional paperwork may be required.)  Once you have your parking decal on your car, the cool color coded map will show you all the places your “letter” allows you to park for free (for 6 months, renter or 1 year, owner).  Don’t be an idiot though, you still need to park in the designated residential zones, but in your district, the time limit no longer applies!  If you receive a ticket in error:  go to the DMV second floor take a number, request to see the hearing officer, and plead your case, this is normally only good for two tickets max.  Anything more and they will tell you to go to court and see the judge.  The hearing officer is only avaliable on certain days and at certain hours, call first so you don’t waste a trip.

How and where do I renew my Residential Parking Permit?

If it haint blue don’t fix it.

Trattoria Lucca (bogard and ashe) keeps away the haints

Trattoria Lucca (bogard and ashe) keeps away the haints

According to an NPR story, there is no evidence to indicate that porch ceinlings painted blue keep bugs or evil spirits away.  However the blue porch ceiling has long been a lowcountry tradition.  Recently my friend Joe repainted the ceiling of his porch bright blue.  It clashes terribly with the earth tones of his modern home, but since building the house five years ago, he has been plagued with mud daubers, a wasp like insect who builds clay nests along porch ceilings.  The theory is that the insects think that the blue ceiling is the sky, instead of a cozy spot for a nest.  If you are Superstitious, you might paint the bright color for other reasons.  Haints, or haunts, are spirits trapped between the world of the living and the world of the dead. You certainly don’t want haints invading into your humble abode looking for revenge. Luckily, the Gullah people remembered an important footnote to the haint legend. These angry spirits have a kryptonite; they cannot cross water. The safest place would be in an underwater bubble, or perhaps to surround your house with a moat. But the Gullah people had a much more elegant solution. They would dig a pit in the ground, fill it with lime, milk, and whatever pigments they could find, stir it all together, and paint the mixture around every opening into their homes. The haints, confused by these watery pigments, are tricked into thinking they can’t enter.

Welcome to the Neighborhood YOJ!

August 9th, 2009 by Currie

YOJ slide webWhen I met Candice Braddock and Erin Comar at 47 A Spring St, it was immediately clear why they are such succesful event planners.  They explained that they have closely followed the major changes that are making Elliotborough such a desirable location for businesses.  They  also explained the benefits of the additional parking, convenience in and out of the city, and the lower price per square foot.  After a quick assesment, they moved in and transformed the space into a beautiful show room. According to this dynamic pair, they specialize in “Meetings for all, sporting events, trunk shows, hip events, and, of course, weddings that make time stand still- they are all on our resume. Regardless of your desired affect, Yoj Events can exceed your expectations for a fabulously flawless event”.  For more information visit thier website www.yojevents.com
